Why Modular Assembly Teaches
Unlike toy clocks with hidden mechanisms, pupils assemble the dial and hands directly over the visible planetary gears. Seeing the central sun gear drive the orbital planets to rotate the hour carrier builds an indelible physical connection between mechanical gear ratios and the passage of time.
Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions
Follow these 5 steps to assemble the Sectional Clock on any classroom table.
Place the cylindrical Base Housing (Stage 1 core) flat on the desk or dock it into the desktop easel stand. The internal planetary carrier is 3D printed in crystal-clear PETG and pre-lubricated with dry PTFE or food-grade mineral oil.
Take the Left Dial Half (11:00 to 5:00) and Right Dial Half (5:00 to 11:00). Slide them horizontally toward each other on the table until the integrated circular dovetail mortise and tenon tabs snap together into a complete circular face (100.0 mm diameter).
Lower the assembled White PLA dial face over the base housing. The 20 mm high cylindrical skirt completely obscures the Stage 1 base gear from side view, directing student visual attention solely to the dial scale and central rehaut.
Take the Stage 2 Hour Ring Gear in Clear PETG. Lower it into the central carrier race so the pointer arm rests flush with the dial surface, visible in the center rehaut opening, and points directly to 12:00.
Lower the Minute Hand (with debossed "M" and joystick handle) onto the central keyed through-shaft pointing to 12:00. Turn the minute joystick through a full 360° revolution; verify the hour hand advances continuously through exactly 30° (from 12 to 1).
